Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE Eligibility)

GATE Eligibility criteria 2023- Candidates preparing for GATE 2023 should fulfill the eligibility criteria to crack the examination. Eligibility criteria for GATE 2023 will be released by the IIT Kanpur in the information brochure. It includes all the conditions about the eligibility criteria compulsory for candidates to fulfill to appear in the GATE exam.

GATE Eligibility Criteria

GATE eligibility criteria are the officially set rules for the candidates applying for the exam. The candidates must confirm whether he or she fits the GATE eligibility. It is vital that the fit in all below mentioned GATE Eligibility criteria to sit for the exam:

  • Educational Qualification.
  • Nationality
  • Age limit.

Apart from these mentioned criteria, candidates must present the required documents while filling out the application form to avoid any rejection.

GATE Eligibility Based on Educational Qualification

The most important GATE eligibility criteria for the exam are educational qualifications. Candidates who are studying in the third or higher year of an undergraduate degree program or who have finished any government-approved degree program in any of the following fields are eligible to take the GATE exam:

  • Enginnering
  • Technology
  • Science
  • Commerce
  • Arts
  • Architechture

We have provided the lists of the eligibility conditions in detail and the candidates who meet the following conditions, however, are eligible to take the GATE exam.

B.E/ B.Tech/ B.Pharm

Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology (4 years after 10+2 or 3 years after B.Sc. / Diploma in Engineering / Technology).

Expected Year of Completion: 2024

B.Arch

Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture (5-year program), Naval Architecture (4-year program), or Planning (4- year course)

Expected Year of Completion: 2025 (for the 5-year program), 2024 (for the 4-year program)

B.Sc. (B.S./Research)

Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Science (Post-Diploma/4 years after 10+2) and those who are in the final/3rd year of such programs.

Expected Year of Completion: 2024

Pharm. D. (after 10+2)

A six-year degree program should include internship or residency training beginning in the third year.

Currently in the third, fourth, fifth, or sixth year, or has previously completed

Expected Year of Completion: 2025

M.B.B.S

M.B.B.S. degree holders and those in the 5th/6th/7th semester or higher semester of such a program.

Expected Year of Completion: 2024

M.Sc./M.A./MCA or equivalent

Candidates must have completed or be in the last year of a Master’s degree program in any discipline of science, mathematics, statistics, or computer applications.

Expected Year of Completion: 2024

M.Tech./Int. M.E

Integrated Master’s degree programs in Engineering/ Technology for post-B.Sc students (4-year program)

Expected Year of Completion: 2024

Int. M.E./ M.Tech or Dual degree

Engineering/Technology Dual Degree Program or Integrated Master’s Degree Program (5-year program)

Expected Year of Completion: 2024

Int. M.Sc./Int.B.S.-M.S

Candidates who are in their last year of a five-year Integrated M.Sc. or five-year Integrated B.Sc./ M.Sc. degree.

Expected Year of Completion: 2024

Professional Courses equivalent to B.E / B.Tech

Professional Societies’ B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch. equivalent examinations accepted by the MoE/UPSC/AICTE (e.g. AMIE by the Institution of Engineers-India, AMICE by the Institute of Civil Engineers-India, and so on)

GATE Eligibility Based on Nationality

Nationality is one of the important conditions of the GATE Eligibility criteria. Various foreign nationals are allowed to appear in the GATE exam. The entire list of the nationality-based GATE eligibility criteria is mentioned below:

Indian national candidates are eligible for the exam.

  • Nepal,
  • Bangladesh,
  • Sri Lanka,
  • Singapore,
  • Ethiopia and
  • United Arab Emirates (U.A.E).

GATE Eligibility Criteria for Foreign Nationals

The GATE Eligibility for Foreign Nationals is that the candidates must be at least in the 3rd year or completed the Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Science / Arts / Technology / Commerce. The candidates must have at least 3 years of Bachelor’s degree.

GATE Eligibility Based on Age Limit

As per the official notification of GATE so far, there is no minimum or maximum age limit specified to appear for the examination under GATE Eligibility. Therefore, candidates belonging to any age group can appear in the exam. GATE exam is conducted annually, and candidates can appear only once per year, irrespective of their age.

Documents that are needed to Support GATE Eligibility

The GATE eligibility criteria also list the documents candidates must present while filling out the application form for the exam. The candidates must submit the following documents to fall under the GATE 2023 eligibility criteria.

  • The degree certificate, course completion certificate, or provisional degree certificate is issued by the society or institute if the candidate has completed any of the abovementioned degrees.
  • Candidates are required to upload their Provisional Certificate Letter (as issued by the Head of the Institute/Dean/Registrar/Head of Department) or copy the marks card for Section A of AMIE, etc. If the candidate is expected to complete one of the qualifying criteria in 2023 or later
  • No documents are required to be shipped by post. All the documents have to be uploaded while filling out the online application.
  • Upload a copy of any of the mark sheets of the final year issued from the institute.
  • Certificate of Dyslexia must be produced as a scanned copy (if applicable).
  • PwD certificate must be presented as a scanned copy (if applicable).
  • Category certificate for SC/ST candidates must be produced as a scanned copy (if applicable).
